New York City has decided to pause student-facing generative AI tools in public schools through eighth grade. This moratorium impacts almost 600,000 students, eliminating the use of generative AI and related chatbots in those grades. It also prohibits the use of companion chatbots for students at all grade levels. For high school students, the approach is more limited. Up to 50,000 students will be able to participate in five pilot programs supervised by teachers. Additionally, all high schoolers will receive AI literacy classes twice a year. Previously, New York City public schools temporarily banned ChatGPT shortly after its release in 2022, before later adopting a custom AI teaching assistant. A randomized Harvard study found that college students using a purpose-built AI tutor achieved greater learning gains than those in a traditional active-learning classroom, often with less time spent. 📰 @aipost
