🔥 Google DeepMind just mapped 9 billion DNA variants We’re moving from simply reading the human genome to using AI to predict what happens when we change it. DeepMind’s AlphaGenome can analyze up to 1 million DNA base pairs and predict how genetic variants affect gene expression, RNA splicing, chromatin and more. Around 98% of human DNA doesn’t directly code for proteins, yet changes in these regions can still influence disease. AlphaGenome can sift through billions of variants and flag the ones most likely to matter. Early research found 22% more non-coding genetic associations in UK Biobank data. If this keeps accelerating, AI could turn the genome from a massive instruction manual into something we can predict, simulate and eventually engineer.
