🇬🇧 The UK wants to build its own open-source AI model from scratch The Alan Turing Institute has proposed developing a British AI foundation model that would be released as a public good, according to a government advisory letter published today. Instead of being controlled by a single company, the model would operate as UK-governed national infrastructure, giving researchers, startups and public services access to AI technology they could build on. Britain’s top science advisers are urging ministers to consider the proposal and allocate national computing capacity for AI experiments and trials. The goal is to give the UK greater control over how advanced AI is developed and deployed. Their warning is that Britain risks becoming a “high-value AI customer”, paying for technology built elsewhere rather than developing the capabilities to shape it itself. @aipost 🏴
