A few genuinely structural things happened this week that seem more important than the usual model-drop cycle, so I wanted to lay them out and get others' read. Nvidia is buying Hugging Face for around $13B. Reported across CNBC, TechCrunch and the wires. HF says it'll "remain an open platform." What's interesting to me is the vertical integration angle — the dominant compute vendor now owns the main distribution hub for open models and datasets (3M+ models, 18M+ devs). Whether "open and neutral" survives a commercial owner is the open question. Apple leadership change + a reported Gemini-for-Siri deal. John Ternus took over as CEO on Sep 1. ❗️Three climbers trusted AI to plan their mountain trip and it went very wrong. Three men set out to climb Mount Shasta in California after relying heavily on Google’s Gemini to help plan their route and decide what supplies to bring. They eventually had to be rescued. The group reached the summit at around 7 p.m. on August 30, roughly seven hours after the recommended noon turnaround time. They then started descending in darkness. About an hour later, they became lost and contacted authorities for directions. Things got worse when they wandered into Mud Creek Canyon, where one of the climbers injured his knee. The three were forced to spend the night stranded on the mountain before U.S. Forest Service climbing rangers reached them the following morning. They were given medical assistance and eventually escorted back to the trailhead. Authorities later learned that AI had played a major role in their planning including advice on how much food and water to bring. Source. @aipost 🏴
